Discovering Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a city rich in art, culture and gastronomic delights! Don't miss these things to see, do and enjoy on a trip to Bordeaux!

1- Porte Cailhau

Porte Cailhau, with a transition design between Gothic and Renaissance, dates back to 1495, and was built to celebrate the victory of King Charles VIII against the League of Venice at the Battle of Fornovo. It had therefore the double purpose of being an arch of triumph and defense of the city. Curiosity: in one of the niches there is a white statue of the king and a sign that says to pay attention to the lintel, because Charles VIII died at the age of 27 after accidentally crashing into one of them at Amboise.

2- The cathedral of Bordeaux

As with many religious buildings in France, the cathedral of Bordeaux had a difficult period during the Revolution, when it was stripped of its furnishings, so almost all the embellishments that can be seen now come from other buildings. This does not detract from the grandeur of medieval Gothic architecture, nor from the historical significance of the site, where in 1137 Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future Louis VII married at the age of 13 and 17, respectively.

3- Place de la Bourse

Bordeaux
Bordeaux got rid of its ancient walls when this majestic square on the left bank of the Garonne was built in 1720. Designed by Jacques Gabriel, the square did not take long to become a symbol of the city. The Water Mirror, created by landscapist Michel Corajoud, stands out: it is a large swimming pool with little more than a film of shallow water, sometimes veiled by fog, reflecting Place de la Bourse.

4- Macaroons of Saint-Émilion

The remains of the convent of the order of the nun of Saint Ursula remind us that the nuns had settled in Saint-Émilion in 1620, where they made this traditional recipe. A tradition of Saint-Émilion for over 400 years, macarons go perfectly with a glass of Saint-Émilion wine or Crémant de Bordeaux.
