6 things to do in Bordeaux
The name of this town is synonymous with viticulture, a must for wine lovers. But Bordeaux is not just wine, on the contrary! Let's discover 6 things to do in Bordeaux.1- Visit the Cité du Vin
This ultramodern cultural center is a celebration of all that is wine, and is one of those ambitious and futuristic projects that is difficult to summarize in a few sentences. For the casual visitor it is a high-tech museum that teaches the history of wine, where and how it is produced in the world. The architecture of this 3,000 square meter building, with its 55 meter tower, is striking at first glance, and the tour culminates with a visit to the bar with a viewpoint where you can combine a glass of wine with a view of Bordeaux and the Garonne.
2- Admiring the Grosse Cloche
Built in the fifteenth century, La Grosse Cloche, with its conical twin roofs, is the old bell tower of the town hall of Bordeaux. It is one of the few remaining fragments of the medieval period of the city and is built on the remains of the Porte Saint-Éloy from the 13th century.
You can see the bell from below, which dates back to 1775 and weighs 7,750 tons. The Grosse Cloche is silent for most of the year, except for large public celebrations such as the Bastille Festival.

3- Crossing Porte Cailhau

The other fragment of the old walls, Porte Cailhau, is just as magnificent. With a transition design between Gothic and Renaissance, it dates back to 1495, and was built to celebrate the victory of King Charles VIII against the League of Venice at the Battle of Fornovo. It had therefore the dual purpose of being an arch of triumph and defense of the city. Curiosity: in one of the niches there is a white statue of the king and a sign that says to pay attention to the lintel, because Charles VIII died at the age of 27 after accidentally crashing into one of them at Amboise.
4- Relaxing in Quais de Bordeaux
The left bank of the Garonne is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in the world. Majestic facades of large neoclassical buildings flank a promenade along the river 80 meters wide. Next to the Garonne, crossed by the numerous arches of the Pont de Pierre, there are benches, flowerbeds and meadows to relax and enjoy the view.5- Visit Esplanade des Quinconces

6- The cathedral of Bordeaux
As with many religious buildings in France, the cathedral of Bordeaux had a difficult period during the Revolution, when it was stripped of its furnishings, so almost all the embellishments that can be seen now come from other buildings. This does not detract from the grandeur of medieval Gothic architecture, nor from the historical significance of the site, where in 1137 Eleanor of Aquitaine and the future Louis VII married at the age of 13 and 17, respectively.Compare now the offers of flights to Bordeaux with our search engine!
