Discovering Bastia

A city with an ancient past and roots deeply rooted in the Italian Middle Ages, Bastia offers its visitors a wide range of things to see, to do and to taste. Let's discover some of them!

1- Chemin des Glacières de Cardo

Right next to the church in the nearby village of Cardo is the trail for a hike that will end with a slice of Genoese history. The walk is well-marked and winds through Mediterranean scrub and past a couple of natural water sources. Eventually you will come to two icehouses, dating back to 1500 and 1800 respectively! On the spot you will find an informative plaque that will tell you how the ice houses worked and that the path you took would have been used to bring the ice to Bastia with donkeys.

2- Visit the Église de Monserrato

Tucked away in the countryside just outside Bastia and reachable on foot in about 20 minutes, this baroque church is worth the effort because it contains something found in only a few Christian buildings in Europe, namely a Holy Staircase! A ladder that religious penitents must climb on their hands and knees to be absolved of their sins. The right to have a Holy Staircase was a real concession from Pope Pius VII, as a reward for giving asylum to 424 Roman prelates driven out of mainland France by Napoleon in 1801.

3- Citadel of Bastia

Bastia
Tackle the walk to the citadel atop the cliff south of the old port and admire the area on the way. This walled neighborhood was known as the Bastille and that's where Bastia's name comes from. The Genoese controlled the citadel from 1380 until 1768, when the island was ceded to France. The ramparts were bombed during World War II, but have been fully restored.

4- U bel fiuritu

U bel fiuritu is a French semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk and is between 4 and 10 weeks old. The rind is thick and dusted with gray and white mold. The paste is soft and creamy, with an intense flavor. The older it gets, the more pungent it becomes. The name of the cheese means little pretty flower, in reference to the wild grasses and herbs on which the sheep graze.
