1- Olive Oil

In Crete, olive oil is called "liquid gold". You will find it with any dish: meat, salads, cheese, vegetables and bread. Olive oil can be bought everywhere and in all different shapes and sizes. In fact, in Crete you will find shelves full of olive oil.

2- Dakos 

Chopped tomato, fresh cheese, herbs and olive oil on a Paximadi (a kind of bruschetta). They are topped with plenty of olive oil to make them soft, but without taking away the crunchiness of the bruschetta.

There is no shortage of cheese in Crete. You'll find several, from Anthotiros, a sheep and goat cheese, to Kefalotiri, mainly made of sheep's milk, hard and with a salty taste. For cheese lovers, you'll be spoilt for choice in Crete!
 

4- Kalitsounia

Kalitsounia cakes are most commonly eaten at Easter but you can find them throughout the year on the island. The dough is worked by hand and shaped into small cups and filled with a sweet cheese. The type of cheese can change depending on which region of Crete you are in and can be baked or fried and often sprinkled with cinnamon or sesame seeds.
