Dishes to try in Budapest

Eat like a local in Budapest ordering some classic Hungarian dishes, from meat dishes to desserts! Here are some dishes to try in Budapest.

1- Kürtőskalács

These sweets consist of long strips of sugar paste brushed with butter and roasted with skewers. The sugar is caramelized to form a sweet and crunchy coating. Before being served they are usually sprinkled with cinnamon or chopped walnuts.

2- Lángos

A fried shortbread focaccia, spread with sour cream and grated cheese or with garlic butter. These hearty snacks are served all year round and are a salty treat at very reasonable prices. The perfect Lángos should be crispy on the outside and soft in the center.

3- Gulyás (Goulash)

Budapest
The Hungarian national dish tends to be served as a stew in most parts of the world, but an authentic gulyás is actually a broth made with pieces of beef cooked with onions, paprika, tomatoes and pepper. It is usually served with fresh white bread and chopped hot paprika on the side. It is traditionally a peasant dish and was originally cooked by shepherds in cast-iron cauldrons.

4- Dobos Cake

This dessert is served in cafes and bakeries throughout the country. It consists of five or seven delicate layers of sponge, each coated with chocolate buttercream and covered with a thick layer of caramelized sugar. The sides of the cake are usually covered with chopped nuts such as hazelnuts, walnuts or almonds. It was invented by the pastry chef Jozsef C. Dobos and was first served to the king in 1885!
