Discovering Dakar

Dakar, the capital of Senegal, have been the thriving pulse of West Africa long before becoming a tourist hotspot. Dakar has always had a vibrant nightlife, bakeries and cafes and culture to spare. Let's discover some things to do, see and eat in Dakar:

1- Visit Lac Rose

Lake Retba, known almost universally as Lac Rose, is Senegal’s very own Dead Sea. Situated 29 kilometres north-east of Dakar, this shallow lake is so named because its remarkably high salt content turns the water varying shades of pink!

2- Go to Ngor Island

The island seems a world away from the mainland. Home to just 100 permanent residents, the tiny island plays host to an infinity of small beaches and local eateries. Head over for the day, soak up the sun, cool off in the clear water and eat some fresh fish on the beach.

3- Ile Gorée

Dakar
Ile Gorée is often cited as the number one thing to see in Dakar, and it’s not hard to see why. Lying two kilometres off Dakar’s south coast, the island is a UNESCO world heritage site. With a population of around 1,500 living in pastel-coloured houses on tranquil cobbled streets, Ile Gorée is really a feast for the eyes.

4- Ceebu jën

The dish most beloved by Senegal and eaten here for lunch several times a week is ceebu jën, meaning rice and fish. Ceebu jën consists of seasoned rice, a piece of grilled or pan-fried fish, stuffed with a garlicky paste, a few vegetables. The flavors are fresh, bold, and surprising. And it’s also cheap!
