Best cherry blossoming destinations

Tens of thousands of cherry trees bloom every year in spring in Japan's most beautiful cities, an extraordinary spectacle that attracts travelers from all over the world.

However, it is not an experience reserved for Japan! You can also enjoy the cherry blossom in the United States, that's where:

Washington, D.C.

Best cherry blossoming destinations
In 1912, the mayor of Tokyo donated 3,000 trees to D.C. as a symbol of Japanese-American friendship. The spectacle offered by the bloom attracts visitors from all over the United States. The D.C. cherry trees are expected to bloom in late March.

Portland, Oregon

Portland has not one but two wonderful places to see the cherry blossoms each spring: the Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Portland Japanese Garden. The Tom McCall Waterfront Park has no less than 100 cherry trees, now the main spring attraction, while at the Portland Japanese Garden visitors have the chance to experience Japanese culture under a dozen cherry trees arranged with great attention to detail.

Newark, New Jersey

Best cherry blossoming destinations
There are approximately 4,000 cherry trees at Branch Brook Park (1,000 more than the more famous Washington, D.C.). The blooming event at this Essex County park has been a visitor attraction since 1927. The park also hosts a free festival in April, a celebration of Japanese culture with demonstrations, live music and a craft market.

San Francisco, California

Although you can find cherry trees all over San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, the most distinctive spot is definitely the Japanese Tea Garden, where a handful of trees are scattered among the bridges, pagodas and the famous tea house. Each year, the city celebrates the bloom with the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, which will take place April 8-16, 2023.

Seattle, Washington

Best cherry blossoming destinations
Since 1962, Seattle residents have known that spring has arrived because of one specific sign: the cherry blossoms. The dozens of trees that line the central quadrant of the University of Washington offer a unique sight during the blooming season.

Boston, Massachusetts

There aren't many places in Boston to see cherry blossoms, but the bloom season along the Charles River Esplanade in Back Bay is truly spectacular. If the weather is nice, you can even kayak along the river to view the bloom right from the river.

These are just some of the best destinations to admire the cherry blossom in the United States. If you're interested in visiting one (or more) of them, you can compare flight prices in seconds with our search engine. Just enter the place of departure, destination and dates in the search engine at the top of the page!
