6 things to do in Toulon

Given the history and nature of the city, many of your activities will have a maritime theme in Toulon. Here are 6 things to do!

1- Sentier des Douaniers

Toulon is located on a network of coastal paths that starts at Six-Fours in the west and continues to Hyères in the east. This is known as the Sentier des Douaniers, which was established in the early 19th century to facilitate the discovery of smugglers by customs officers. The 300 hours of sunshine per year in this part of France allows many of the plant species along the trail to remain in bloom even in winter. The most avid hikers will want to test their courage on the grueling trail between Pointe de Cap Vieux and Cap Sicié.

2- Visiting the Musée Mémorial du Débarquement

The museum and memorial commemorate the Allied invasion of the Provence coast on August 15, 1944. If you are passionate about military history, you will be fascinated by the presentations of the different operations and battlefields around Toulon, elaborated with maps, models and photographs. There are many contemporary uniforms, weapons and field equipment to see, and outside you can admire an American tank and German anti-tank guns left after the battle.

3- Snorkeling at Anse Magaud

Toulon
On the Sentier des Douaniers there are a couple of small coves with beautiful coves, and behind them there are steep rocks with cypresses, palms and pines. Among them, Anse Magaud is a paradise for snorkelers: a cluster of large rocks in the center of the bay form a natural barrier to the currents and hide a lot of underwater life.

4- Stroll along Corso Lafayette

Street markets are a way of life in Provence and here you can get to know and buy all the local products and delicacies. Cours Lafayette is a long pedestrian street that stretches all the way to the port and every morning of the week, except Monday, there is a market that takes place along the entire length of this street. Arrive in the morning for a freshly baked dessert and orange juice, and browse the stalls selling seasonal fruits and vegetables, cheese, olives, fish, preserves, local lavender, flowers and herbs.

5- Admire Place de la Liberté

Toulon
Toulon's main square is the nerve center of the city and is worth a short walk or a stop at one of the café terraces on either side. On the north side of the square is the neoclassical Grand Hotel, the symbol of Toulon, built in 1870. The hotel was converted into apartments in the 90s and recently the elegant Théâtre Liberté on the ground floor was opened. The fountain is from 1890 and represents France and celebrates the transport of the Statue of Liberty from France to America in 1886.

6- Génie de la Navigation

At the port there is a marvelous marble statue from 1847, which underlines Toulon's maritime heritage. The figure, with an anchor at her feet, has one arm and one finger protruding towards the sea, and is an allegory of the spirit of conquest and exploration of the sea depths.
