6 things to do in Tehran

A spectacular mountain range, some architectural gems, art and culture. There are many things to do in Tehran! Let's discover some of them!

1- Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran

Although Iran may not be a world leader in contemporary art today, you should still visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tehran to see the splendid collection of world-class European and American pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Opened by Empress Farah Pahlavi in 1977 - just two years before the Revolution, the TMoCA contains some of the most valuable collections of modern Western masterpieces outside of Europe and North America.

2- Visit the former U.S. Embassy in Tehran

The famous former American Embassy in Tehran, where 52 diplomats were taken hostage for 444 days by students during the 1979 revolution. Be sure to take the free tour to learn more about the colorful visual and spoken propaganda. It is also absolutely fascinating to see the once secret rooms used for spying and have a true sense of the work done in the American Embassy before the revolution.

3- Relax in Park e Shahr

Tehran
A sprawling park in the center of Tehran, close to all major museums in the neighborhood. Take a walk and admire the bird park, aquarium and library. The Tehran Peace Museum is also located here. You will also find many cats around and you can participate in a game of table tennis with the locals who gather here to relax and unwind.

4- Visit the Prison Museum of Qasr prison

The Qasr Prison Museum in Tehran is a dark look at the Pahlavi-era prison complex, renowned for its psychological and physical torture. The former inmates still guide you today and will share memories of the suffering suffered here. The gardens of the former Qasr prison have been transformed into a beautiful park. Here you have an intensely real look at what life was like in this prison just before and during the revolution, but it is not suitable for the faint of heart!

5- Visit the Museum of the Islamic Revolution

Tehran
A glorification experiment with more than a hint of propaganda, a visit to the Revolution Museum remains one of the things to do in Tehran. Focusing on the bloody Iran-Iraq war, which caused more than a million deaths, there are more than seven rooms detailing every imaginable aspect of the conflict. This is a very high-tech museum that will give you a better idea of this harrowing episode in modern Iranian history.

6- Tochal Telecabin

If the inevitable smog of Tehran becomes a bit too much for you, going to the mountains with the Tochal Telecabin located in northern Tehran is the ideal solution. You can take a 45-minute trip uphill and then with a short walk you can easily reach the Tochal Mountain (3933m). As you would expect, the view is incredible and if you feel fit, there are many opportunities to hike to the different stations along the way!
