6 things to do in Rome

The entire center of Rome is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics and probably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Here are 6 things to do in the capital of Italy!

1- Visit the Roman Forum

The Forum was rediscovered in 1803. After a century of excavations it was reopened to the public and you can walk in this open-air museum, which dates back to the sixth century BC. Walking through the remains of what was once the heart of Roman public life, you will find well-preserved temples and monuments, free audio guides and lots of information explaining what it was like in ancient times.

2- Climb the Palatine

Here Rome was born. It is said that Romulus killed his brother Remus on the Palatine, and excavations have also found traces of Iron Age settlements. Now a beautiful park, this is the place where the aristocrats and Roman emperors had their palaces.

3- Visit Castel Sant'Angelo

Rome
Emperor Hadrian built the fortress originally as a mausoleum, before it was transformed into a military outpost. Today it houses the National Museum of Castel S. Angelo. In some periods of the summer the Passetto di Borgo is open to the public. This elevated path that connects the castle to the Vatican was created as an escape route for the Pope.

4- Stroll around Villa Borghese

There are about 200 acres of gardens in this hilly park, and you can enjoy a wonderful view of Rome. Rent bicycles and explore the fountains, attractions and buildings, including a replica of Shakespeare's Globe in the middle of the park. The museum is open six days a week and has some incredible sculptures by Bernini. Book your tickets in advance to enter the museum and gallery - they sell out quickly.

5- Admire the Pantheon

Rome
Originally built by Emperor Hadrian in 125 AD, the Pantheon is very well preserved. The protagonist of the show is the "oculus", an opening 9 meters in diameter (a hole where light passes through) in the ceiling. A visit on bright sunny days, the beams of light illuminate the entire interior creating a unique atmosphere. Likewise, it is curious to go there when it rains, because you can see the water falling from the oculus "disappear" in 22 tiny holes.

6- Discover the oldest market in Rome

Once a place of public executions, Campo dei Fiori is now a daytime market, with side streets full of independent businesses and small stores. It returns in the evening, when the square becomes a place of celebration. Curiosity: it is also the only Roman square without a church.
