6 things to do in Pointe-à-Pitre

Ideally located in the centre of Guadeloupe, where Basse-Terre meets Grande-Terre, Pointe-à-Pitre, the economic capital of the Guadeloupe archipelago, is worth a visit, if only for its typical streets, two museums and delightfully colourful markets! Here are 6 things to do on a trip to Pointe-à-Pitre:

1- Visit the market of Darse

The unmissable and picturesque Darse market, which takes place every morning from Monday to Saturday, will amaze you with its fresh fish sold directly by fishermen and its wonderful stalls full of exotic fruits and vegetables.

2- Visit the Church of St-Peter-and-St-Paul

The church of St-Peter-and-St-Paul, a protected historical monument, has a lovely yellow and white facade. Inside you can admire a metal-framed roof and a 19th century Carrara marble altar. For lovers of exotic plants, don't forget to visit the fascinating flower market held every morning on the churchyard!

3- Place de la Victoire

Pointe-à-Pitre
Piazza de la Victoire, dotted with royal palms, is named after the triumph of the sans-culottes and the end of slavery. You will find a tourist office located in a neoclassical colonial style building, a bandstand built in 1930 and the statues of governors Félix Éboué and Charles Victor Frébault.

4- Saint-John Perse Museum

Housed in a beautiful building with a beautiful metal frame, the Saint-John Perse Museum houses a permanent exhibition on the life of poet and pointoist diplomat Alexis Leger, alias Saint-John Perse, as well as on Creole costumes.

5- Schoelcher Museum

Pointe-à-Pitre
The Schoelcher Museum, located in an elegant classical building, exhibits a collection of objects that belonged to the French politician Victor Schoelcher, a great defender of human rights and the abolition of slavery.

6- Bas-du-Fort marina

The marina of Bas-du-Fort and its port are at least worth a visit. This area, which is very lively at night, is also the final destination of the Route du Rhu, a famous transatlantic solo regatta that takes place every four years in November.
