6 things to do in Malta
Malta has about 7000 years of active history, good weather and beaches. This means that it is an excellent place for a lazy holiday, or a cultural holiday in the city. Not to miss out on the best attractions, here are the best things to do in Malta:1- Stroll around the capital
The capital of Malta is La Valletta. It is very small, covering less than a square kilometer. Which makes it very easy to explore on foot. It is full of historic buildings, baroque architecture and houses with colourful balconies. From the Upper Gardens of Barrakka you can enjoy a great view of the city and its harbour, while around Valletta there are several fascinating museums. The best place to discover the history of the country is the National Museum of Archaeology. The museum's collection includes objects dating back to 5000 BC and is housed in one of the most beautiful historic houses in the city.
2- Set sail for the Three Cities
From the port of Valletta there is a regular ferry service to three equally historic cities. Birgu (also known as Vittoriosa), Senglea and Conspicua are collectively known as the Three Cities, and were founded in the Middle Ages. But their origins date back much further. They have been the main entry point to Malta since the time of the ancient Greeks. Even less modernised than Valletta, if you wander the streets of these cities you will experience a more traditional way of life. Especially during the lively festivals that take place throughout the year.
3- Explore the historical forts

Fort St Elmo overlooks the port of Valletta. It played an important role in the defence of Valletta during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, and again in World War II. These days, military re-enactments are held in the grounds and here you will find the National War Museum, but you will also find historical fortifications throughout the Maltese Islands. In the 17th century, a series of watchtowers were built all along the coast of the country. Although some were demolished over the centuries, many of them are still standing. Some are even accessible to the public.
4- Go to the beach
From April to October is the best time to go to Malta if you are visiting the beaches. All three islands have truly spectacular beaches and the water is particularly clean for swimming. On the main island, the most popular beaches include Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay - both on the north-west coast. Gozo's beaches are popular with divers and sailors. Ramla L-Hamra beach on the island is worth a visit, to see its red sands.5- Go out and admire the landscape

6- Swimming in the Blue Lagoon
Just off the coast of Comino, the extremely photogenic Blue Lagoon is the most popular place in the country. It lies on the route between Malta and Gozo, so sailboats from both islands regularly stop in the sparkling turquoise waters of the lagoon. There isn't much beach around the area, so the sands can get very crowded. Avoid crowds by going either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. If you're planning your next holiday in Malta don't miss the chance to compare offers for flights to Malta with our search engine!
