6 things to do in Fort de France

Fort de France in Martinique is the capital of this French overseas department. It is also one of the main cities in the Caribbean, thanks to the fact that the port is the export point for goods such as sugar, rum, fruit and cocoa. Here are 6 things to do in Fort de France:

1- Cruise in search of dolphins and whales

At the Baie de Fort de France you will find the embarkation point for dolphin and whale cruises. There is a large selection of operators offering this experience. Dolphins will probably be there to welcome you at any time of the year, but whales are only found around the Caribbean Sea in winter!

2- Visit the Cathedral of St. Louis

The main Roman Catholic church in the city of Fort-de-France was built in 1895. But in fact, before that, there were six other churches. The first one was built in 1657, but during the following years, they were all destroyed by natural disasters. The designer of the current construction is quite well known in the world: it is in fact Gustave Eiffel, who was responsible for the construction of a steel structure of the cathedral that would survive hurricanes and earthquakes.

3- Visit Fort Saint Louis

Fort de France
The most famous fort in Fort-de-France - Fort Saint Louis - was originally built in 1638. But over the centuries it has been the target of many English and Dutch warship disasters. We can still visit a saved part of the fort, as most of it is still in use today as a naval base. History lovers can also take a guided tour of the fortress.

4- Relax at Place De La Savane

Place De La Savane is a park located between Fort Saint Louis and the Schœlcher Library. It is a large park of green grass, diversified with palm trees and trees. Next to the park is an alleyway with street food outlets, a good place to relax after visiting the rest of the city. Nearby is the statue of Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.

5- Walking in the Jardin de Balata

Fort de France
For two decades, starting in 1982, the horticulturist Jean-Philippe Thoze has been looking after an incomparable variety of rare tropical plants, including 300 different varieties of palm trees. You will be enchanted by the bright colours of the flowers that stand out in this garden.

6- Admire the Palace of Justice

The original Palais de Justice in Fort-de-France was destroyed by an earthquake in 1839. In 1855 the governor of Martinique decided to build a new one in neoclassical style. The space in front of the building was transformed into a square with a fountain in the centre. Today, the statue of Victor Schœlcher with a young freed slave has replaced the fountain.

These are just some of the activities to do during a trip to Fort de France. Find now the best price for a flight to Fort de France with Jetcost!
