6 things to do in Crete

Crete has plenty of activities for all types of visitors, from Bronze Age archaeological sites, Minoan palaces and cities, to the island's mountain ranges and gorges to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Here are 6 things to do in Crete!

1- Explore the Samaria Gorge

Walking through the Samaria Gorge from the Omalos plateau is a unique experience. The 16-kilometer hike starts from a viewing platform at the end of a winding path and wooden steps, where you will be lifted by the rock walls that climb up to almost 300 meters. At the end of the gorge, there are three more kilometers to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where you can take the ferry to Sougia to the west or Sfakia to the east.

2- Admire the Venetian Port of Chania

The Venetians began building the port of Chania in 1320 and the work would continue for the next three centuries. The western part of the harbor was where goods were brought ashore, while the more sheltered eastern part was for the construction and maintenance of ships. There you can still find the terrace of the dry docks and repair yards, built from the mid 1400s to 1599.

3- Bathing at the lagoon of Balos

6 things to do in Crete
A beach that rivals Elafonisi, Balos Lagoon is just as heavenly and is one of Crete's most famous images. Balos is located about 60 kilometers northwest of Chania and can be reached by ferry from Kissamos. The lagoon is positioned between two promontories, Gramvousa and Tigani, which create a natural shallow pool of water as beautiful as it is safe. By boat you will also have the opportunity to get a closer look at the islands of Gramvousa, one of which, Imeri Gramvousa, has a historic fort built by the Venetians.

4- Relax at Falassarna Beach

Falassarna beach is located on the west coast, where the Gramvousa peninsula joins the mainland. There are five separate beaches here, around a large bay that was a port in ancient times. The main destination for sun worshippers is the most central beach, which has a wide swath of pale sand, washed by a clear, shallow sea.

5- Visit the Monastery of Arkadi

6 things to do in Crete
This monastery just over 20 kilometers southeast of Rethymno is of great importance to the history of Crete and the locals. Supposedly founded by the Byzantine Emperor Arcadius in the 5th century, Arkadi Monastery is located on a plateau surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and oak trees. In Ottoman times it was famous for its gold embroidery and an exceptionally rich library. In 1866, during the Cretan revolt, 943 Greeks locked themselves in the monastery and resisted for three days against the Ottomans. The siege ended when the Cretans set fire to their barrels of gunpowder, choosing martyrdom over surrender. The site is now a Greek national shrine, and November 8, the day of the explosion, is a day of celebration in Arkadi and Rethymno.

6- Visit the Palace of Phaestos and the archaeological site

The second largest Minoan palace in Crete after Knossos, Phaistos sits in a prime location on high ground above the Messara plain in south-central Crete. In Greek mythology, this was the home of Radamanto, the brother of Minos. This is the origin of the enigmatic Phaistos disk, exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.
