4 things to see in Toulouse

On the banks of the Garonne, Toulouse has the nickname of "the Pink City" because of the many buildings made with bricks of this characteristic color. Let's discover 4 things to see in Toulouse!

1- Basilique Saint-Sernin

Completed in 1100, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin, listed by UNESCO, is perhaps the largest Romanesque church in Europe. The crypt also contains a large number of relics, more than in any other church in France, and many were donated by Charlemagne to the abbey that stood on this site in the 1800s. Outside, the five-storey brick tower is unmistakable, and looking up you can see where the construction was interrupted in 1100 and resumed in 1300 by the shape of the arches.

2- Museum of Toulouse

Not a museum on Toulouse, but the largest ethnological and natural history institution in France outside Paris: The Muséum de Toulouse has more than 2.5 million exhibits. Many of the collections here have been collected by the most curious minds of the 19th century. This applies to the prehistoric section, with Neolithic axes, a Mesolithic tomb and a bronze necklace from the Holocene era.

3- Place du Capitole

Toulouse
The square in front of the town hall, one of the landmarks of the city, houses a majestic palace of the characteristic pink color that gives the square its name. There are fragments dating back to 1100, and if you walk on the back of the Capitol you can see the Renaissance keep of the building. Take a tour to admire the ceiling frescoes of the Salle des Illustres and the images of the Salle Gervais, where the 19th century artist painted allegories of love.

4- Bemberg Foundation

The Hôtel d'Assézat, the illustrious residence of the Bemberg Foundation, is in itself a marvel. This palace was designed by Nicolas Bachelier, the most prestigious Renaissance architect in Toulouse, and took almost 30 years to complete. The art gallery inside is equally magnificent, and is based on the collection of Georges Bemberg, patron of the 20th century.
