4 things to see in Toulon

With a huge natural harbour protected by the peninsula of Saint Mandrier, Toulon was born to be a port. Let's discover 4 things to see in Toulon!

1- Mont Faron

The mountain of 584 meters behind Toulon made it such an attractive port in antiquity. Mont Faron blocked the mistral wind from the northwest and, being right on the coast, it was the ideal lookout post for monitoring maritime traffic and spotting enemy ships. Thanks to the cable car that leaves from a terminal in the north of the city, you will be at the top in six minutes to admire the beautiful view and take walks on the cliff top trails.

2- Rade de Toulon

The military port, used by the French navy since the 15th century and, together with Brest, the main base of the French fleet, is worth a visit. During a guided tour of the docks of the Baie du Lazare you can learn about the history of the port and the historic naval cemetery. You can also admire the gigantic warships and the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.

3- Plages du Mourillon

Toulon
Just east of the port, the Plages du Mourillon are four contiguous sandy beaches. They are all horseshoe shaped bays, shielded by long breakwaters that leave the sea shallow and smooth. If you choose to walk from the center should not take more than 20 minutes to get there, while those arriving by car will find a large parking lot completely free.

4- Navy Museum

The ideal place to deepen your naval knowledge about the navy and the history of the French navy. The museum is accessed through an impressive 18th century doorway of the former arsenal, which forms the facade of the building. This, together with the nearby clock tower, is one of the few buildings that survived the bombardments during the war. Inside you can admire a fascinating collection of models of historical ships, old maps, paintings of the port of the 17th and 18th century, figureheads of legendary ships such as the 80 cannon Neptune. There is also a gallery with insights and artifacts on the pioneering submarine Gymnote, developed in Toulon in the 1880s.
