4 things to see in Southampton

Southampton, the largest city in Hampshire, is a historic port where many of the world's largest cruise ships continue to dock. Let's discover 4 things to see!

1- SeaCity Museum

This museum was opened in 2012 to mark the centenary of the Titanic's departure from Southampton. The highlight is the one-tonne replica of the Queen Mary, which sailed between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York until 1967. Here you can also learn more about Titanic's history from a new perspective on the world's most infamous maritime disaster, i.e. from the crew's point of view, many of whom were based in Southampton. You can watch the re-enactments of the judicial inquiry into the sinking and listen to the audio reports of the survivors.

2- Mayflower Theatre

One of Southampton's greatest cultural attractions is its 2,300-seat theater, which has reinvented itself a few times since it opened as the Empire Theatre in 1928. The Mayflower, between 1950 and 1986, hosted the greats of music history, such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Queen. Now the program is dominated by theatrical and musical productions.

3- Tudor house and gardens

Southampton
This 15th century house on Bugle Street became the city's first museum when it opened to the public in 1912. The house was renovated during a nine-year closure until 2011, and inside you can learn about the history of the people who have lived and worked here over the centuries. At that time the house housed artist's studios, a carpenter, a dyeworks and a bookbindery, and in the 19th century it was a well-known slum. In the Renaissance style garden is the Palace of King John, a Norman residence from the 12th century, while the house also has a majestic Georgian wing.

4- Solent Sky Museum

In the early decades of the 20th century, Southampton was the home of the aircraft manufacturer Supermarine, who designed the famous Spitfire fighter aircraft. That company won recognition for its success in the Schneider Trophy, a seaplane race between 1913 and 1931. That race and the history of the Supermarine brand are at the heart of this aviation museum. Among the many exhibits you can admire a real Spitfire F.24, as well as the Supermarine S.6, which won the Schneider Trophy in 1929.
