4 things to see in Saint Denis

The capital of Reunion is the ideal place to get to know the unique culture of this island. Let's discover 4 things to see in Saint Denis!

1- Jardin de l'État

In the city center there is a botanical garden overflowing with plant life, with avenues of palm trees, a large fountain and water gardens. There are more than 50 species of trees and more than 1,950 species of other plants in this wonderful environment. Everything was imported in the 18th century to test the climate of Reunion.

2- Rue de Paris

From north to south in the center of Saint-Denis, this street is the perfect introduction not only to the city, but to the culture of the island of Reunion. It is worth joining one of the guided walks because of the historical beauties that can be observed: you will see Villa Déramond-Barre, the white minaret of the mosque of Noor-e-Islam, and the birthplace of the poet and painter Léon Dierx.

3- Léon-Dierx Museum

Saint Denis
In the former Episcopal palace of Rue de Paris is the museum of fine arts of Saint-Denis. It is a rather small museum, but houses works by great artists: there are paintings by Cézanne, Gauguin and Renoir, as well as a bronze by Picasso. You can also immerse yourself a bit in the culture of Reunion by discovering François Cudenet, the photographer and painter who helped to bring cinema to the island at the beginning of the 20th century.

4- Artothèque

In Rue de Paris you will find this "art library" in a beautiful 19th century Creole mansion. It was founded in 1991 to help cultivate contemporary art on the island. At that time it collected more than 2,000 works from Reunion and other places in the region. The Artothèque is also a place where artists and their public can meet, participate in workshops and hold temporary exhibitions.
