4 things to see in Palermo

Roman and Norman, Byzantine and Arabic, Bourbon and Spanish. Palermo is a city that has seen many significant influences on its history. Let's discover 4 things to see in Palermo:

1- Norman Palace

One of the most visited monuments, the Palazzo dei Normanni, is the perfect representation of the cultural mix of Palermo. Built to house the Arab emirs, it was then occupied by the Normans who expanded it, and then by the Spanish. Today it is the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. The jewel of the Norman palace is the Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of the Arab-Norman-Byzantine style, considered by many the most beautiful church in Sicily.

2- San Giovanni degli Eremiti

Next to the Norman Palace, you can visit San Giovanni degli Eremiti, a medieval Norman church. Famous and easily recognizable for its bright red domes from the outside, it is also worth a visit inside. The cloister and gardens are really beautiful, while the church is very simple, with a wise mix of Muslim and Norman style.

3- Cathedral of Palermo

Palermo
From the outside, the view is simply magnificent. From the unique architecture, the Cathedral is a true mix of different styles. Inside, you can visit the crypt and see the tombs of kings and queens, including that of King Roger II. Also not to be missed is the treasure of the cathedral, a collection of royal jewels from the 12th century. Take advantage of the visit to climb the rooftops of the cathedral to admire a beautiful view of the entire city.

4- Quattro Canti

The intersection of the Quattro Canti marks the intersection of the 2 main streets of Palermo, Via Vittorio Emanuele (the street where the cathedral is located) and Via Maqueda leading to the Teatro Massimo. Take a walk around this intersection to admire these 4 perfectly symmetrical facades, all built on the same model: at the base, a fountain representing the seasons; on the first level, the statues of kings and, on the last level, the representations of the 4 patron saints of Palermo.
