4 things to see on a trip to Mauritius

Formed of paradise islands off the southeastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, the nation of Mauritius is named after the island of Mauritius. With breathtaking beaches, UNESCO sites, mountains and parks, there are many attractions for visitors! Here are some tips on what to see in Mauritius:

1- Port Louis

Capital of Mauritius, Port Louis was founded in 1735 by French governor and pioneer Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais. The city offers many activities during the day and is full of cultural and historical treasures not to be missed. A visit to the central market is a must: there you can breathe the true soul of Mauritius. There are also many historical sites, including for example the Champ de Mars, the oldest horse race course in the southern hemisphere.

2- Mahebourg

The main city of the Grand Port district, was founded at the time of the Dutch settlement. In Mahebourg you can enjoy relaxing walks along the characteristic cobblestone promenade, where local fishermen spend their days on their wooden pirogues. In the Monday bazaar, near the bay, you'll find local crafts, fresh produce and unlimited street food!

3- Le Morne

Mount Le Morne is one of Mauritius' most popular tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This majestic mountain of 556 meters has an enormous cultural significance for the inhabitants of the island. The summit covers an area of over 12 hectares with numerous caves and overhangs on steep slopes. It is one of the must-see tourist sites in Mauritius!

4- Ile aux Aigrettes

Ile aux Aigrettes is a small island located in the bay of Mahebourg, about 850 m off the south-east coast of Mauritius. It is home to the last remnants of dry coastal forest, which used to be found around most of Mauritius. In 1965 the island was declared a nature reserve and thanks to the conservation work carried out over the years you can now admire both the forest and some rare species that have long since disappeared from the island. For nature lovers this is a must!

These are just some of the wonders to enjoy in Mauritius. The islands also reserve many unique activities and gastronomic delights. If you want to learn more, take a look at the 6 things to do in Mauritius and the 4 dishes to try in Mauritius.
