4 things to see in Malta

The Maltese Islands have about 7,000 years of history, so the attractions of their heritage are many. Let's discover 4 not to be missed!

1- Mdina

Mdina is a perfectly preserved walled city on top of a hill north of the main island. Until the mid 16th century, Mdina was the capital of the country and home to many of the richest people in the Mediterranean. After the capital was moved to Birgu (and then Valletta), Mdina went into decline. It has remained largely unchanged since its heyday, so there are some fascinating historic houses and palaces to explore.

2- Rotunda of Mosta and Co-Cathedral of San Giovanni

Churches can be found on all the islands. There are more than 360 in total - more than one per square kilometer. There are two particularly famous churches: the Rotunda of Mosta, located northwest of the main island, is inspired by the Pantheon of Rome. And the Co-cathedral of St. John of Valletta, which is often referred to as one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in Europe. It dates back to 1570, and was founded by the Knights of St. John. The impressive art collection of the cathedral includes famous works by Caravaggio and Peter Paul Rubens.

3- The temples

Malta
Ġgantija, the temple complex in Gozo, built around 3600 BC, is older than both Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. On the main island, the temples of Ħaġar Qim are almost as old. And on the island there is also the temple complex of Tarxien. Dating back to around 3150 BC, the ruins have some incredibly detailed engravings: the best preserved of these ancient monuments is the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. Although almost as old as the site Ġgantija, this underground burial complex was protected from the elements and was only rediscovered in the early 20th century. It is worth booking a tour in advance, as the number of visitors is strictly limited for conservation reasons.

4- Manoel Theatre

Valletta has one of the oldest working theatres in Europe. Opened in 1732, the auditorium of the Manoel Theatre has preserved many of its original features. The venue regularly stages performances in English, including a traditional pantomime every winter. It is also particularly appreciated by international opera and dance companies.
