4 things to see in Fort de France

The capital of Martinique is the result of a meeting between France and the Caribbean. Here are 4 things to see in Fort de France:

1- Jardin de Balata

For two decades, starting in 1982, the horticulturist Jean-Philippe Thoze has been looking after an incomparable variety of rare tropical plants, including 300 different varieties of palm trees. You will be enchanted by the bright colours of the flowers that stand out in this garden.

2- Bibliothèque Schœlcher

At the end of the 19th century, the abolitionist writer and politician Victor Schœlcher bequeathed his vast library of 10,000 books to the General Council of Martinique, but it is the building itself that is a masterpiece: the design is a mixture of Byzantine, Egyptian, Occidental and Art Nouveau.

3- Dolphins and whales

Fort de France
At the Baie de Fort de France you will find the embarkation point for dolphin and whale cruises. There is a large selection of operators offering this experience. Dolphins will probably be there to welcome you at any time of the year, but whales are only found around the Caribbean Sea in winter!

4- St. Louis Cathedral

Natural disasters have unfortunately been routine in Martinique: in fact, the current St. Louis Cathedral is the seventh to be erected here! It dates back to 1895 and the reason for its longevity is an iron and reinforced concrete structure. You can browse inside for a few minutes to look at the wooden pulpit, 19 stained glass windows, the organ and the wrought iron balustrade, all original.
