4 things to see in Amsterdam

Over the course of a fifty-year project Amsterdam has grown to four times its previous size, becoming one of the largest cities in the world. And it is full of attractions to see! Here are 4 not to be missed:

1- The canals

It may seem obvious but the canals of Amsterdam are a real work of art in the open air. The intricate network of canals that connect and cross the city offers a unique spectacle: enjoy the light of the sunset reflecting on the water or breathe the fresh air comfortably seated to admire the boats that sail through the city. Some of them are real houses to stay in!

2- Dam Square

A world-famous square, Dam Square is home to the Royal Palace, the National Monument (a memorial obelisk from 1956) and the 15th century Nieuwe Kerk. It is located where the Amstel River was dammed in the 13th century and was the scene of Amsterdam's central market in the Middle Ages.

3- Rijksmuseum

Amsterdam
An extraordinary showcase of Dutch art, applied art and historical artefacts, the Rijksmuseum invites you to retrace 800 years of Dutch history in a specially constructed neo-Gothic palace. Approximately 8,000 pieces are on display at one time and for many the museum's pinnacle is the collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.

4- Anne Frank House

On the Prinsengracht, the Anne Frank House houses the secret accommodation where the young Anne Frank hid from the Nazi persecution from 1942 until her capture together with her family and four other inhabitants in 1944. The rooms are located in an enclosed courtyard behind a 17th century canal house that served as the Dutch headquarters of the spice companies for which Anne's father, Otto, worked. The secret rooms give a visceral sense of what it was like to live in hiding, while the temporary exhibitions on persecution and fascism serve as an insight into that dark period in world history.
